India take 1st test away from England

India has won the first test against the touring English team on Monday November 19, 2012 in Ahmedabad, India. The second innings starts for the Indians were once again Virender Sehwag and Cheteshwar Pujara, who played some exciting cricket to take their team to victory shortly after lunch.

In their 2nd innings, England batted well to score 406 runs in reply to India’s 1st inning’s score of 521/8. England were bowled out of 191 in the 1st innings and were made to follow on. Captain Alistair Cook played a captain knock to reach 176 in the 2nd inning, but wasn’t supported very well by his teammates, only Matt Prior played a defiant 91 which helped England reach 406;  setting India a target of 77 for a win.

Pragyan Ojha was the star with the ball for India in the first innings, taking 5 wickets for just 45 runs at 2.01  runs an over. He was supported by R. Ashwin, who took 3 wickets as well. In the second innings, Ojha came to the party once again, picking off 4 English batsmen for 120 runs. This time however, he was supported by pace-men Umesh Yadav and Zaheer Khan.

Graeme Swan was England’s lone impact bowler, taking 5 for 144 in the 1st innings and 1 for 46 in the second. Cheteshwar Pujara was named the man-of-the-match as India won by 9 wickets.
