North Korea has always been a thorn in the side of the United Nations. The country has had unpredictable leaders in the past and their reputation of defying international norms is no secret. South Korea is generally wary of the activities that take place in the North as well. Kim Sook, who is South Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations (UN) has said there is some activity that is currently taking place in the adjacent country and that a nuclear test could be eminent.

Sook said that everyone was watching to see what the next step would be for his neighboring country and urged the United Nations security council to reply with ‘firm and strong’ measures if a test was conducted by North Korea.

In regards to North Korea conducting a nuclear test, all 15 council members were unified in their stance against the procedure. China, who is an ally of the North also confessed that it did not endorse a nuclear test being conducted.

In the past, North Korea has defied the UN and has proceeded to conduct nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009. Kim Sook holds the rotating presidency of the UN currently and said that he was speaking to the council members as an ambassador from South Korea, rather than the council president.
