British broadcaster BBC has announced its plans to launch five new high definition channels by early 2014. The broadcaster will be launching HD versions of BBC News, BBC Three, BBC Four, CBeebies and CBBC. These channels will be available over rooftops aerials through Freeview receivers and also satellite and cable services.

The recent development comes after regulator Ofcom announced that it will make it possible to launch a total of ten new HD channels with the help of airwaves freed up by the switch off of analogue TV. Tony Hall, director of BBC said, “BBC One HD and BBC Two HD have already proved to be highly valued by our audiences and I’m delighted that we’re able to follow this with the launch of five new subscription-free BBC HD channels by early 2014”.

Hall went on to say that these channels will allow the broadcaster to showcase more of their programming at its very best. For the time being, there are only four HD channels which are offered over Freeview, which launched its HD service in 2010.

Moreover, BBC also indicated that it wants to launch English regional variants of the existing BBC One HD services, along with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland editions of BBC Two HD.
