UK still hasn’t warmed up to the idea of consuming online news.

A new report has suggested that the traditional media organizations continue to be a dominant source of online news in the UK.

The research, carried out by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, is based on a YouGov survey of over  18,000 people spanned across 10 countries.

More than half of those who polled, said that they followed current news through an established brand, with just a meagre 16% using digital-only sites like Buzzfeed and Huffington Post.

New media companies were found to be more popular in Japan and the US. The study also found that just one in ten people paid for online news content in the past year.

The consumers in Brazil, Germany, France, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Spain and urban Brazil were also questioned about their new habits.

7 % of the people who were polled in the UK said that they paid for the news in 2013 which was the lowest of all the ten countries.

Nic Newman, one of the report’s editors said that there is a limited group of people who are interested to pay for news when there are free alternatives. Social networking site Facebook remains the dominant force in the sector.
