The late President of Poland Lech Kaczynski and his wife, Maria, were given a farewell in the city of Krakow, Southern Poland. As the couples cortege went by the streets of Krakow, thousands of mourners stood in silence in respect of the late President and the Polish delegation who died in the plane crash a week ago.
The burial would be at the historic Wawel Cathedral and the funeral was held at St. Mary’s Basilica. The funeral also completes one week of National mourning for the country of Poland who lost many of their top officials.
Many world leaders were supposed to attend the ceremony, but a lot of them had to cancel due to the hazardous flying conditions in Europe – as a result of the volcanic ash.
United States President Barack Obama was also unable to attend the ceremony.
Other World leaders like Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Britain’s Prince Charles and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper were also unable to attend.
