UK Today News: Tariq Aziz Sentenced To Death- Former Iraqi Foreign Minister & Aide Of Saddam Hussein Sentenced By Iraqi Court

The Iraqi Supreme Court has awarded a death sentence to Iraq’s former Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Tariq Aziz; along with two other people, on the grounds of persecution of various religious parties.

74 year-old Aziz was well known as the confidential advisor of Saddam Hussein. The other two defendants in the case include ex Interior Minister, Sadoun Shakir and former Personal Assistant of Saddam Hussein, Abed Hamound. Reports state that Aziz is currently in a critical health condition, after suffering a stroke.

According to sources, the religious parties that he persecuted included Shia Muslim parties such as the Dawa Party. The elimination of these parties was done between the years 1980 to 1990. The former Foreign Minister had also been convicted before for killing 42 Iraqi merchants.

The date of the execution of Aziz and his two counterparts has not been decided as of now. But the case is open for appeal and the Presidential Council has yet to confirm with the death sentence.
