In a repeat of last year’s result, Dortmund beat Bayern Munich 2-0 and went on to win a record 6th German Super Cup title.

Borussia Dortmund started their season campaign on a high as they beat archrivals Bayern Munich 2-0 in the German Super Cup, for the second year in a row. Dortmund now have 6 Super Cup victories under their belt, the most by any German club. The match was played in Dortmund in front of a sold out crowd of 80,667.

Pep Guardiola was once again denied the only domestic trophy he hasn’t won since he took over as the Bayern coach in January 2013. It was Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 23′ minute goal that setup the victory, while a 62′ goal by Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed the victory for the home team.

Bayern suffered a big blow as they lost Javi Martinez at the 30 minute mark when a bicycle kick by him went wrong and he collided with a Borussia Dortmund defender. He had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. However, it was Aubameyang’s goal celebration that was the highlight of the match as he paraded around in a Spiderman mask.

Lewandowski started for Bayern against his former club and there were a lot of expectations from him, but he didn’t see much of the ball as Dortmund looked to attack right from the start.

This win will certainly boost the confidence of the club as they start their 2014-2015 season, while Bayern will look to recover from this loss and retain their Bundesliga title.

The Bundesliga is set to begin on August 23, 2014 with the first match being played between Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg.
