Adele to repeat Grammy success at Brit Awards?

UK Today News: After the outstanding success of the British songstress Adele at the Grammys, seems like the singer is now all set to dominate the upcoming Brit Awards too. On February 12, 2012 the singer bagged six awards and won in all the nominations.

With the win, Adele has come equivalent to Beyonce’s record of total number of Grammys. On February 21, 2012 the singer is expected to take away the Best Female Solo Artist Award.

The singer faces competition from Florence and The Machine, Jessie J , Kate Bush and Laura Marling. However, the other contenders too are strong contenders for the award.

With not much argument , Adele’s album 21 is expected to take away the Album of the Year award for which the singer has to compete with Florence and The Machine, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay. The category also includes Let England Shake by PJ Harvey. Harvey in the year 2011 became the first artist to win the Mercury Music Prize twice and her album also topped many music critics’ end of year lists. Still Adele’s 21 seems to be the obvious choice. The toughest category to face would be the Best British Single for which ten nominees have been included.

Grammy Awards 2012 – Adele, Foo Fighters and Kanye West Dominate

UK Today News: The stars from the world of music got together on February 12, 2012 at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles to give away the awards for the best of the year that just passed.

British singer Adele, who made her come back with the major event, walked away with six of the awards for which she was nominated, which included Song of the Year, Coveted Album of the Year for her hit ‘Rolling In the Deep’, Best Pop Vocal album and Best Short Form Music Video.

Kanye West took three awards out of the seven categories for which he was nominated, but the rapper skipped the show this year and wasn’t there to receive the award. West won Best Rap album for ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’, while leaving behind Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Lupe Fiasco and Jay Z. Kanye also claimed Best Rap song and Best Rap Collaboration.

The other major winners for the night included Foo Fighters, who took home five Grammys that included Best Rock Album for ‘Wasting Light’, Best Rock Performance for ‘Walk’, Best Long Form Music Video for ‘Back and Forth’ and Best Hard Rock/Metal performance for ‘White Limo’.

American indie folk singer Bon Iver won the award for Best New Artist and the album claimed the Best Alter native album leaving behind Radiohead, ‘Death Cab for Cutie’, ‘My Morning Jacket’ and ‘Foster the People’.

The Grammys night was also lucky for Skriller, who won three Grammys for Best Dance/Electronica album, Best Dance Recording and Best Remix Recording.

Late singer Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennett’s duet ‘Boy and Soul’ won the Best pop Duo/Group Performance.

Bruce Springsteen won Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for ‘The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town’.

Arade Fire, who were last year’s big winners also won Best Recording package for their film ‘Scenes From The Suburb’.

David Tennant named Best Actor at BBC Audio Drama Award

UK Today News: Scottish actor David Tennant recently won the Best Actor Award at the maiden BBC Audio Drama Awards. The actor, who was also hosting the ceremony on January 29, 2012 at BBC Broadcasting House in Central London took away the prize for his performance in Radio 3 drama ‘Kafka: The Musical’.

‘Lost Property-The Year When My Mother Went Missing’, which was broadcasted on Radio 4, claimed the award for the Best Audio Drama. Rosie Caveliero walked home with the Best Actress Award for her role in ‘Lost Property: A Telegram From The Queen’, also aired on Radio 4.

The Best Adaptation was claimed by ‘The History of Titus Groan’. The award ceremony was organized to recognize the cultural importance of the audio drama online as well as on air and to give recognition to the actors, writers, sound designers and others who work on the genre.

For his role in the Radio 4 play ‘Referee’, Andrew Scott claimed the award for Best Supporting Actor/Actress in an Audio Drama and the Best Scripted Comedy Drama was claimed by Hugh Hughes. Tim Fountain’s ‘Rock’ won the Best Online Only Audio Drama. The Best Use of Sound in an Audio Drama was won by Bad Memories. The Innovation award was won by The Unfortunates by Graham White.

Oscar Awards 2012 Nominations announced

UK Today News: The nominations list for the upcoming 84th Academy Awards aka Oscar Awards 2012 have been announced. This year, Martin Scorsese’s family movie ‘Hugo’ has received the maximum of eleven nominations. Tom Sherak and Jennifer Lawrence made the annnouncements from Los Angeles on January 24, 2012.

Brad Pitt’s movie ‘Moneyball’ and Steven Spielberg’s movie ‘War House’ bagged six nominations each, while ‘The Decendants’ was named in five categories. Gary Oldman got his first Academy Award nomination this year for his role in ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’.

BAFTA 2012 – The Artist, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy grab maximum nominations

UK Today News: The nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) have been announced on January 17, 2012. BAFTA awards have been seen as the British equivalent of the Academy Awards due to which they are certainly of great importance in the UK and every film wants to be a winner of these gongs.

The already popular silent film ‘The Artist’ has grabbed the maximum of 12 nominations this year, which includes the Best Picture. This year’s BAFTA nominations have got some surprises too with ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ receiving 11 nominations which include Best Leading actor, Best Picture and Best director.

‘Drive’ has been included in the Best Picture category. Actress Carey Mulligan has also been nominated for the Best Supporting actress for ‘Drive’.

Martin Scorsese has been nominated for Best director for ‘Hugo’. The film maker has also been nominated for his work in the documentary ‘George Harrison: Living In The Material World’. Scorsese will also be receiving the BAFTA’s Academy Fellowship, which is no less than a lifetime achievement award. It will also be interesting to see if that will affect his chances to win the Best Director’s trophy. But this year ‘The Artist’ is surely going to dominate the award ceremony.

The BAFTA Award ceremony will be held on February 12, 2012, which is just two weeks before the 2012 Academy Awards event.

Ricki Gervais says he will never host Golden Globe Awards again

UK Today News: English comedian and actor Ricki Gervais, who is the star of the 2012 Golden Globe Awards, has reportedly stated that he never wants to host the awards ceremony ever again. Gervais described his experience as a ‘parachute jump’.

The British comedian hosted the 2012 Golden Globe Awards this year for the third time. Gervais also got in to a controversy after a series of a near-the–knuckle remarks on some of the biggest names taken in Hollywood. This year, the ‘Ghost Town’ actor was criticized for not being funny enough. One of the critics also stated that his performance felt ‘forced and heavy handed’.

In response to the criticism, Gervais wrote on his blog that he had a blast, but he did not want it to do it again and has instructed his agent to never to let him be persuaded to host the Golden Globe Awards again as it is like a parachute jump. The host added that he enjoyed it in retrospect when one realises that that it was quite an amazing experience.

Ricki rose to fame as the star as well as co-creator of the BBC sitcom ‘The Office’. The actor said that the audience thought that his gags only seemed rude and nasty, but were actually not scary.

BAFTA hosts tea party for nominees of 2012 Golden Globe Awards

UK Today News: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) recently hosted a tea party for the nominees of the 2012 Golden Globe Awards. The 18th Annual Awards Season tea party, which has become some sort of awards ceremony ritual, was hosted by the Los Angeles branch of the BAFTA.

Neil Stiles, the chairman of the BAFTA/LA, welcomed the guests and implored them to raise their glasses and wished all those who were nominated the ‘Best of British luck’. The stars who attended the tea party included Hugo stars Sir Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Moretz, The Artists stars Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo and Ideas of March star Evan Rachel Wood as well as War Horse star Emily Watson.

Kenneth Branagh, who has been nominated in the supporting actor category, said that the BAFTA tea party is a part of the road to the Golden Globes. Branagh added that one enjoys every bit of the journey that marks the way.

The actor also said that there is a little ritual for getting ready for the night and the day is a long preparation, so by the time one gets inside the room no one can help but be swept up with adrenaline.

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 15, 2012.

Brit Awards 2012 nominations announced

UK Today News: As the Grammy Awards fast approaches, the UK equivalent of the music awards ceremony, the Brit Awards, have also announced the nominations for the 2012 ceremony. British singer Ed Sheeran has received the maximum of four nominations , while Adele has got three nominations for Best British Single, British Female Solo Artist and Album of the Year.

The process of the choice of nominations is different from that of the Grammys. Based on the sales and airplay, 10 finalists of the British single of the year are automatically selected. The Brit Awards ceremony will take place on February 21, 2012 in London.

The Book Of Mormon earns 14 nominations at 2011 Tony Awards

UK Today News: The religious musical, ‘The Book Of Mormon’, on Tuesday grabbed 14 nominations at the 2011 Tony Awards. The announcement was made on Tuesday, which put the musical on the race for earning a record for the most number of nominations.

The story is about the two missionaries, who get more than they imagined while in Africa. Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez have penned down the musical and they were also responsible for the creation of Avenue Q.

The musical does not have a strong cast, but managed to rule the box office and became a favorite of the audience. The movie has songs about AIDS and even a man telling his plight as he has maggots on his scrotum.

The Book Of Mormon had impressed the audience so much the a church had issued a statement that the movie may entertain the audience for the evening, and the movie will change the lives of the people and would bring them closer to Christ.

The next in the race for the highest nominations was The Scottsboro Boys, which received 12 nominations. The movie is a story about a injustice, showcase as a minstrel show in the 1930s.

The 2011 Tony Awards will take place on June 12.

UK Today News: British actor Colin Firth has finally won an Oscar award after more than 25 year’s of his acting career. Firth took the Academy Award for “Best Actor in a leading role” for his portrayal of King George VI in “The King’s Speech” at the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday.

While accepting the award from last year’s Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock, a visibly emotional Firth said that he felt his career has finally peaked. In 2009, Firth received and Academy Award nomination for his performance in “A Single Man”.

The British film “The King’s Speech” also won the the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director (Tom Hooper), as well as Best Original Screenplay (David Seidler)

Pregnant actress Natalie Portman won the “Best Actress” Oscar for her role in “Black Swan”. She also won the Golden Globe Award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as the BAFTA Award for her lead role in the same movie.
