BAFTA 2012 – The Artist, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy grab maximum nominations

UK Today News: The nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) have been announced on January 17, 2012. BAFTA awards have been seen as the British equivalent of the Academy Awards due to which they are certainly of great importance in the UK and every film wants to be a winner of these gongs.

The already popular silent film ‘The Artist’ has grabbed the maximum of 12 nominations this year, which includes the Best Picture. This year’s BAFTA nominations have got some surprises too with ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ receiving 11 nominations which include Best Leading actor, Best Picture and Best director.

‘Drive’ has been included in the Best Picture category. Actress Carey Mulligan has also been nominated for the Best Supporting actress for ‘Drive’.

Martin Scorsese has been nominated for Best director for ‘Hugo’. The film maker has also been nominated for his work in the documentary ‘George Harrison: Living In The Material World’. Scorsese will also be receiving the BAFTA’s Academy Fellowship, which is no less than a lifetime achievement award. It will also be interesting to see if that will affect his chances to win the Best Director’s trophy. But this year ‘The Artist’ is surely going to dominate the award ceremony.

The BAFTA Award ceremony will be held on February 12, 2012, which is just two weeks before the 2012 Academy Awards event.

Kate Winslet reunites with Leonardo DiCaprio for Titanic 3D

UK Today News: Popular and the good looking onscreen couple Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio will once again be seen promoting for the 3D version of the block buster Hollywood flick ‘Titanic’. The British actress and DiCaprio will be seen together this spring for the movie by James Cameron.

The movie ‘Titanic’ was released 15 years back and is now all set to entertain the audience with its 3D version. Winslet also played Ophelia on Kenneth Branagh’s screen version of Hamlet in the year 1996.

Since then, the actress and Branagh have been friends and now the actor has roped in the star in the movie based on Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Burrow’s best selling novel ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. The filming of the movie is expected to start from mid march.

Kate will be seen playing the role of Juliet Ashton, who wrote columns for a magazine during the time of World War II.

On January 11, 2012, the actress saw the ‘Titanic 3D’ footage and is likely to attend the premiere of the movie in London during late March. DiCaprio has also seen the footage of the movie last year, who was then knocked out by his leading lady. The producer of ‘Titanic’ revealed that when Kate first auditioned for the movie, she sent the director a note along with a rose.

Kung Fu Panda 2 movie review

UK Today News: Kung Fu Panda is back with its sequel. This time the movie is a lot more energetic, funny and has got some amazing visuals from the director Jennifer Yuh. The story of ‘Kung Fu Panda 2’ has been improvised, but since it seems to have not live up to the first movie, it’s in for some mixed reviews.

Some of the styles used by the director have worked really well for the movie, like the paper style animation which looks like it has been done in an extremely delicate way. However, the 3D does not seem so impressive in the movie, and a 3D -less movie would have worked a lot better.

The story obviously is about the character ‘Po’, who is a panda and spends most of his time day dreaming in his dad’s restaurant. And then starts the quest of the panda, when he goes down the memory line wondering, who might have been his biological parents.

The voices have been given by Jackie Chan, David Cross, Seth Rogen and Jack Black. While the sequel has been made with a little more energy than the previous one, parents should be aware of some of the violent sequences in the movie, which may not be fit for children below four years of age. Also, there tend to be a lot of emphasis on pagan beliefs, which won’t do down to well with a major part of the audience, but it does emphasizes on some good qualities of patience and forgiveness.

Moreover, the movie seems like it has been stuffed with too many characters, due to which the importance of the even the main characters have diminished. Nonetheless, it won’t be a disappointment to kids.

Facebook to show Warner Bros. movies?

UK Today News: In a unique step by Warner Bros, the company has announced that it will stream some of its blockbuster movies on the social networking site Facebook. This is the first time that a major Hollywood studio has planned to work with a social networking website, and in a way, this becomes a milestone to be remembered.

The entertainment company executives hope that the idea may turn out to be a new way to earn some money. For now the services will be available only for the Facebook users in America. “Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts,” a Warner Bros statement said.

If the idea turns out to be successful, then the service will be introduced in other countries too. Facebook users will be charged 30 Facebook credits or $3 to rent the film, after which the user will have 48 hours to watch the movie.

To begin with, the 2008 block buster Batman: The Dark Knight will be made available to the users. The other films will follow in the next few months. Fans are looking forward to an amazing turnout of movies.

‘I Am Number Four’ ranks second at the box office

UK Today News: Sci-fi thriller ‘I Am Number Four’, in spite of not much earnings at the box office, has earned the rank of being number two. The movie stars new comers Alex Pettyer and Dianna Agron.

The movie so far has earned $19.5 million, while many suggested that the movie would earn somewhere in the mid-higher twenties. ‘I Am Number Four’ came as a surprise package for the audience who quite understandably did not have many expectations for the movie- considering the fact that there is no star cast here.

However, the movie proved that it takes more than a good marketing campaign to make it successful. Many said that the movie was similar to the movie ‘Twilight’, but ‘I Am Number Four’ was much better in terms of romance and excitement.

The movie earned $3.3 million overseas, which is reportedly three times more than a normal movie earns outside. The film has proved to be a huge success this weekend. The movie was also benefitted as most of the schools were closed this weekend.

Harry Potter stars to re-shoot scenes for Deathly Hallows: Part 2

UK Today News: The stars of Harry Potter were called back to re-shoot some scenes of for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 movie. It was not long ago when British stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were in tears on the final day of the shooting of the Harry Potter series, and now the three have to do a re-shoot.

But Emma Watson seems to have a slight problem here — as soon as the shoot was finished, she badly wanted a makeover and had chopped off all her hair into a pixie crop in the month of August. “I needed a change, and that’s what the haircut is about,” Emma said.

The Harry Potter crew is now on it’s toes to find a new wig that will best suit Emma in her Hermione role. The Twilight franchise had faced a similar situation during the shooting of Eclipse, after Kristen Stewart had chopped off her hair for a role in another film.

Last month, Daniel had confirmed the re-shooting of certain scenes of Deathly Hallows.

Renowned Italian Filmmaker Mario Monicelli kills himself

Popular Italian film maker of olden times, Mario Monicelli, killed himself after jumping from a hospital window. According to reports, Mario jumped from the fifth floor of a hospital in Rome.

The 95 year-old film maker was reportedly admitted to the San Giovanni hospital a few days ago, where he was being treated for prostrate cancer. The director was applauded for his works like Amici Mei (My dear friends) and I Soliti Ignoti (Persons unknown).

Mario started his career as a director in the year 1949, and was awarded the Great Lion, in the Venice Film Festival. Mario often made films about ordinary people with extraordinary situations. He made around 70 films.

The renowned Itlalian film-maker studied in the local lyceum, and with the help of his friend Giacomo, he entered the world of films. His film Brancaleone (For Love and Gold) is considered to be among his finest works in the world of Italian cinema.

Horror film actress Ingrid Pitt dies at 73

Ingrid Pitt, the Hollywood horror movie star, passed away on November 23, 2010 in London. The actress was reportedly going for a dinner when she suddenly collapsed. Pitt was 73 years old.

According to reports, Ingrid Pitt died after she suffered a stroke. Her daughter Steffanie Pitt said, “It was heart trouble. She had a couple of bad years, health-wise. She was a fantastic woman. Anyone who knew my mother would say she was incredibly feisty.”

Though Pitt debuted in acting when she was in Germany, she got a good break in ‘Where Eagles Dare’ in the year 1968. The movie also starred Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton.

She will always be remembered for her role in the cult classic ‘The Wicker Man’. The director of the movie Robin Hardy said, “She was a very attractive person in every sense. She was a perfectly good actress but a very decent person as well.”

Pitt was named as ‘England’s First Lady of Horror’ for her roles in ‘The Vampire Lovers’ and ‘Countess Dracula’ with Hammer Film Productions.

Reviews of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part:1 movie, the final installment of the Harry Potter series, state that it can be a disappointment for those who have not followed the previous six movies. J.K. Rowling’s movie on the boy wonder released globally on November 19, 2010.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part:1 is only made for those who have seen all the previous six parts of the Harry Potter series, say reports. The tongue twisting words in the movie can make it difficult for the average audience to understand what the story is all about, but all the same, it can be interesting. UK Today News: Golden Globe Awards 2011 – Robert De Niro to receive Cecil B DeMille award

The Golden Globe Awards 2011 will see veteran actor Robert De Niro being presented with the coveted Cecil B DeMille award at the event aka Lifetime achievement award; which will be held on January 16, 2011.

The 67 year-old Oscar winning actor is best known for his films Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Kevin Spacey made the announcement and praised the actor a lot saying, “Robert de Niro is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest actors of all time. He has set the bar for every actor. He is unafraid to transform himself, both inside and out.”

Al Pacino, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg have also been awarded with the Cecil B DeMille awards in the past years. The awardees are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are awarded to those individuals who have contributed to the field of entertainment.

Robert De Niro has also being recognized for his works as a director, as a producer and as a co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, New York.
