The results of the Corby by-elections will soon be declared. This will be seen as a mid-term test of David Cameron’s leadership. If the vacated seat by Louise Mensch is won by Labour, then it will be the party’s first gain from the Conservatives at a by- election since the year 1997.

The turnout figure has been confirmed at 44.8 % and the result is expected to be out at around 14:30 GMT.

The police elections are taking place as well, where the first police and crime commissioners have already been chosen. The results which were announced overnight saw Conservative Angus Macpherson elected as commissioner for Wiltshire. In Bristol, counting is still underway and voters have been choosing the city’s first directly elected mayor. The police elections are seeing low turnout ranging between 13% to 20%, amid speculation as to whether the people thought it was a good idea to have them at all.

Andy Sawford, a candidate for Labour and son of Phil Sawford, the former MP of nearby Kettering, is expected to take the seat amidst controversy over the resignation of sitting MP Louise Mensch. Sawford arrived at the count and was greeted by supporters.
