Google honors Nelson Mandela’s 96th birth anniversary

July 18, 2014 marks – South Africa’s anti-apartheid hero – Nelson Mandela’s 96th birth anniversary. The iconic man died at the age of 95 in December 2013, after battling a severe pulmonary infection. Tech giant Google has honored the man’s memory by releasing a doodle that encapsulates Mandela’s life.

Mandela who was more popularly known as ‘Madiba’ amongst his followers was born on July 18, 1918 into a Thembu royal family. His tale of perseverance and struggle against the white minority rule in South Africa, remains immortal.

Imprisoned for 27 years before becoming South Africa’s first black president in 1994, Mandela’s efforts of forming a united South Africa based on the message of peace and love have been lauded world wide.

The Google Doodle is an interactive genius that showcases milestones of Mandela’s  life. Once the Doodle is clicked on, it starts off a slide show, set against the backdrop of what presumably looks like the South African village where Mandela was born, there are a series of iconic quotes from Mandela’s autobiography – The Long Walk To Freedom.

The doodle also features buttons for captions, search an share, alongside. When users click on the search button, they are taken to Google’s search results for Nelson Mandela.
