Paul Walker, Cory Monteith, Nelson Mandela named most Googled people in 2013

American actor Paul Walker, the ‘Glee’ star Cory Monteith and the veteran South African leader Nelson Mandela have been announced as the most searched people on Google in 2013.

The online giant released the data as part of its annual report, but did not state the number of searches per person. The trending queries are based on the highest amount of traffic during a sustained period  in 2013, while the top 10 most-searched queries are calculated on the basis of the volume of searches. Walker passed away in a car crash on November 30, 2013 in LA, while Monteith was found dead in his hotel room in Vancouver on July 13, 2013.

The former South African president Nelson Mandela passed away at the age of 95 – after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection – on December 5, 2013. The top ten searches of 2013 also included iPhone 5S, Boston Marathon, Harlem Shake, Samsung Galaxy S4, PlayStation 4 and North Korea.

Miley Cyrus was the most searched celebrity on Google during 2013 in the US and is followed by Kim Kardashian, Beyonce Knowles, Selena Gomez, Drake, Kanye West and Rihanna. Moreover, the controversial act performed by Cyrus led to the ‘What is Twerking?’ search on Google, which became the most search phrase beginning with ‘What is…’ in 2013. The search engine also released the top 10 most searched movies  and TV shows in the US.
