After the sensational death of Savita Halappanavar’s in Ireland, her husband Praveen has decided to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. Praveen will now push for an independent inquiry into his wife’s death, which took place after she was denied an abortion.

The husband of the deceased Savita said that he does not have any faith in the official inquiries that are currently taking place. One of these inquiries was conducted by the Ireland’s Health Services Executive and the other was conducted by the Health Information Quality Authority.

Gerard O’Donnell, the Solicitor General of Mr. Halappanavar said that he was identifying a team of junior and senior counsel members to take action in the case. O’Donnell said “I expect to sit down with them and my client early next week to draw up papers to submit to the European court”.

The solicitor general also said that the family has received offers from women and human rights groups across the world in the quest into Savita’s death. However, the Irish government has not yet cooperated with any independent inquiry that are being held. The first two investigations are ongoing and are yet to run their course. The 31-year-old Savita died of blood poisoning after the doctors at the Galway University Hospital refused to abort her unborn child due to Ireland’s anti-abortion law. The death of Savita has caused raging protests across the country to force the amendment of abortion laws.
