UK Today News: Scotland’s big freeze has led to Scotrail’s liability to pay at least £500,000 to passengers as a refund, after the travel chaos in the region. Reports state that the operator will refund the fares to the passengers, as a gesture of goodwill to its stranded customers in the UK.
The firm has also said that it will decide the refunds on individual cases, as per the severity of the weather conditions on that particular day. Season tickets, for up to ten days, will be refunded and will cover four weeks till the end of December.
The freezing conditions in Scotland had hampered the services which resulted in commuter chaos. There were also public complaints of no prior information about the cancellation of trains.
“Difficult decisions had to be taken following the impact on infrastructure and weather-related damage to our trains. This included the introduction of temporary timetables or suspending services on a number of routes,” ScotRail managing director Steve Montgomery said. The Transport minister Keith Brown has appreciated the refund announcements.
