UK Today News: Clashes between Haitian protesters and UN peacekeepers kills one
The cholera outbreak in Haiti has led to the Haitians accusing UN peacekeepers of bringing it from Nepal. Reports state that there is no evidences to prove this but there is still no respite to the ongoing clashes between the protesters and UN peacekeepers in Haiti. One person is reported to have been killed.
The cholera epidemic in Haiti has killed 900 people and several people are still suffering from the disease.
The UN peacemakers had to fire tear gas to move away the protesters in Cap Haitien, after they began pelting stones and blocking the roads. BBC reports that there “there was a demonstrator who had a weapon and fired at a soldier, and the soldier returned fire in legitimate self-defence.”
The ongoing demonstrations are about the location of cholera treatment centres. The locals fear that this may bring infection in their area.
