London New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration begins

UK Today News: As the new year fast approaches, the preparations are underway in the city of London for the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

More than 250,000 people are expected to join at the banks of the river Thames for the annual fireworks display.However, for London it will be a special celebration as it will also mark the beginning of the start of the year in which the city will host the Olympics. 3,000 police will be deployed while the London Ambulance Service said that it was preparing for a surge in calls.

The assistant director of the operations from the service, John Hopson said that ‘booze buses’ will also be deployed for the people who will look after the people who are drunk so that ambulances can look after the people who are in a more serious condition. Hopson said that last year was one of the busiest nights they ever had taking just under 800 calls an hour. One of the main attractions for the night will be the popular fire works display on the South bank which will be broadcasted live on BBC and also on the worldwide news outlets.

Dan Ritterband, the director of marketing at the Mayor of London’s Office said that as far as London’s international reputation is concerned, having the shots beamed around the world as a part of the celebrations of the New Year are very vital to the economic prosperity. Ritterband added that Times Square is colder and Sydney is warmer, but London has the best fireworks in the world.

The executive producer of Jack Morton Worldwide, Jim Donald, the company that puts on the firework display said that although the event was great to watch locally, it has been designed to be watched for Television broadcast. Some of the services like the buses, the tube, tram , DLR and some of the selected National Rail services in Greater London will run all night.
