France Floods: Flash floods in southeastern France on Wednesday have killed around 15 people, with city streets flooded with meters-high of water washed away vehicles, trees and left people stranded, according to the government of the Var region. 12 people are missing.
Torrential rains on Tuesday resulted in a rapid rise of water levels in the region, thereby preventing many people from leaving their homes and leaving them with no place to go but to seek shelter on the roofs of their homes.
Reports say that helicopters worked through Tuesday night to rescue and evacuate people who were stranded by the floodwaters, which is known to have reached a height of about 2 meters in some places.
More than a thousand people have spent the night in shelters and thousands of other people are currently without electricity or phone service.
According to CNN: ‘French President Nicolas Sarkozy issued a statement expressing condolences for the victims’ families and support for rescue teams who are “mobilising non-stop to provide aid and find those still missing,” the agency reported.’
The airport in the city of Toulon was closed on Tuesday after the runway got submerged by water.
