The latest research has shown that people suffering from diabetes are almost 50 percent more likely to have a heart attack than those who do not have the condition. It was observed that almost 14,500 diabetics suffered a heart attack in England and Wales between the year 2010-2011, which is 4,700 more cases than expected.

It was also revealed by the National Audit that sufferers are at a greater risk of heart failure, as well as other potentially fatal conditions including angina strokes. The report shows the extent of peoples suffering, as people with diabetes have been dying earlier and are also developing health problems which are more pronounced than the rest of the population.

The reports mentioned that 48 percent of people are more likely to have a heart attack and 65 percent are more likely to have a heart failure. According to figures between 2010 and 2011, 17,900 diabetics suffered from a stroke while 9,800 suffered from a kidney transplant or dialysis, while 1,700 needed a major amputation.

People suffering from diabetes are also at a higher risk of death than people without the condition. The excess risk is much higher among people with rarer Type 1 diabetes, which accounts for 10 percent of all cases of the disorder. People who have the more common Type 2 diabetes, are 36 percent more at risk.
