NDM-1 – The New ‘Superbug’ Found in UK Hospitals

UK Today News: NDM-1 – The New ‘Superbug’ Found in UK Hospitals

NDM-1 Superbug: According to experts, a new superbug that has entered the UK hospitals has been found to be resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics.

New Delhi metallo-ß-lactamase-1, or NDM-1 is said to be made from a bacteria which creates this enzyme. Experts believe that this bacteria may have travelled back with NHS patients from countries like India and Pakistan who went abroad there, to get themselves cosmetic surgery treatments.

Scientists however fear that this newly found Superbug NDM-1 may go global although they have been around 50 cases in the UK so far which have been identified. Experts also fear that the NDM-1 could spread to the other types of bacteria that are resistant already to various other antibiotics.Consequently this would become almost immpossible to treat as dangerous infections could be produced and that would spread very quickly between people.

International researchers also claim that NDM-1 could become a major global health problem as they have found similiar infections in countries like the US, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.

Dr. David Livermore, Researcher from the HPA adds that-

‘The fear would be that it gets into a strain of bacteria that is very good at being transmitted between patients’.
