England got off to a good start earlier in the day, with captain Cook playing yet another solid innings for his side. He fell for 76 and received good support from Kevin Pietersen, who also scored 76 and was involved in some heated conversations with Ishant Sharma on the pitch. The 22-year-old Joe Root was the only other significant contributor to the innings with a well-played 57 off just 61 deliveries.

Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers with 3 wickets for 39 runs, while R. Ashwin and Ishant Sharma picked up 2 wickets a piece to see the English home for 257 off their allocated 50 overs.

In response, India lost Gambhir early for 10, but Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli steadied the ship. Yuvraj Singh failed to contribute on his home ground, falling for 3, but Suresh Raina made the most of the opportunity to rack up a solid 89 off 121 balls. A performance that won him the Man of the Match award.
