UK Today News: Lena Horne Dies At 92 – Stormy Weather Singer-Actress, Civil Rights Activist Dies In NY
Lena Horne Death: Lena Horne, a performer who was famous for tearing apart the racial boundaries by reforming the way Hollywood portrayed black women, besides having a wonderful 60 year singing career, died on Sunday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, according to reports. She was 92.
Lena Horne,came into the Hollywood limelight back in 1942 and was the first black woman to sign a contract with a major studio – a contract that stated that she would never play the role of a maid.
She became famous in Hollywood because of a number of musical films that she acted in, some well known ones being “Cabin in the Sky,” and “Stormy Weather.” Lena also made two major appearances in MGM films in the 1950’s in the Duchess of Idaho and the musical Meet Me in Las Vegas.
The actress was also known for her contributions to the Civil Rights movement.
