UK Today News: Indonesia Earthquake Kills 3- Massive 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake, Several Smaller Quakes Strike Indonesia Today
Indonesia Earthquake – A series of four earthquakes – the largest being a 7.0 magnitude one – struck near the Papau cost in Indonesia on Wednesday, and has killed three people, authorities said. This was then followed by a fifth and sixth quake a few hours later.
Reports say that a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck at 12:06 p.m. local time, and a massive 7.0 magnitude quake hit Indonesia barely 10 minutes later, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The two earthquakes were then followed by a 5.1 magnitude quake and a magnitude 6.2 quake, 42 minutes later. This was then followed by smaller quakes of magnitude 4.9 and 4.8 after 3 p.m local time.
According to CNN: “The epicenters of the earthquakes were clustered within 90 kilometers (56 miles) of each other and some 180 kilometers (110 miles) north of Enarotali, Indonesia.”
The earthquakes led the authorities to issue a tsunami warning, which was later lifted.
Back in December 2004, a 9.1-magnitude quake off the coast of Aceh triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed thousands of people in 13 countries including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
