Labour has taken away a seat from the Conservatives in a by-election for the first time in 15 years by taking Corby in Northamptonshire. The election was won by Andy Sawford with 7,791 votes, while Tories and UKIP came second and third respectively.
The newly elected MP said that with the result voters have delivered a damning verdict on David Cameron, but the Prime Minister said that it was a classic mid-term result. The Liberal Democrats asked for two recounts, but lost and landed up in the fourth place.
The people of Corby were angered after former MP Louise Mensch stood down after just two years in office, in order to move to New York with her family earlier this year. The seat was widely expected to be won by Labour and was won by Ms Mensch by fewer than 2,000 votes at the last general election.
The result will be seen as a mid-term test of prime minister Cameron’s leadership. Sawford, in his victory speech said, “This result is a historic win for today’s one-nation Labour Party.” The newly elected MP also said that Middle England has spoken and they have sent a very clear message to David Cameron that this is a truly significant result.
