Search engine giant Google is all set to shut down its long dormant social networking site Orkut. The social networking site was launched ten years back, but failed to match up with other social networking sites on the web.

Google announced that it will take back the services of Orkut on September 30, 2014. The website is widely used in India and Brazil but could not match up with the existing market competition.

Meanwhile, the company has declined to say how many users it has. Google on its Orkut blog said, “Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut’s growth, we’ve decided to bid Orkut farewell”.

The social network had launched in 2004, the same year  that Facebook was launched, Facebook has now gone on to become the world’s number one social network with 1.28 billion registered users.

In recent times, Google has been planning to position its ‘Google +’ as a competitive social network service. The company has said that it will preserve an archive of all the Orkut communities which will be available from September 30, 2014.
