New England was struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 on October 16, 2012. The earthquake hit at 7:12 pm, but no damage or injuries have been reported so far. The US Geological survey said that the epicenter was four miles from the Hollis Centre.

The quake started off at being registered as 4.6 magnitudes on the Richter scale, but ended up being 4.0. Some of the residents of South Marine said that they had first heard the quake before they felt it. New England is not used to such quakes, but it has been known to experience moderately damaging earthquakes once every few decades. The smaller ones can occur a couple of times a year.
