British broadcaster BBC has confirmed that Ben Elton’s sitcom ‘The Wright Way’ has been cancelled after its first series. While talking at the Broadcasting Press Guild lunch, comedy commissioner Shane Allen said that the decision has been made in conjunction with the comedian writer. The show stars ‘The Thin Blue Line’ actor David Haig.

The show was canceled as it was heavily criticized in reviews and on social networking site Twitter. Allen also stated that the makers of the show have made a valiant effort, but Elton has been bruised by the reception. The famous writer is known for his shows, like ‘Blackadder’ and ‘The Young Ones’.

He previously said that his happiest memories were when he was writing the BBC comedy. The show ‘The Wright Way’ is Elton’s first BBC One sitcom since ‘Blessed’ in 2005, but simply did not appeal to the audience. Allen admitted, “It wasn’t what you could call a flop, over the course of a week it had 3.5m to 4m viewers”.

Moreover, even the critics were not kind, as The Mirror called it ‘the worst sitcom ever’. More reports stated that the first episode hardly managed to raise a smile. The channel also announced that it has re-commissioned a second series of ‘Count Arthur Strong’ for BBC Two.
