The Central Weather Bureau reports that at 8:40 a.m, the Typhoon struck Taiwan’s eastern city of Hualien and had sustained winds of 102 mph, which weakened to 89 mph by afternoon.
In anticipation of Fanapi, some schools in the counties of Taitung, Hualien and Yilan were closed, and there were reports of people being evacuated in certain areas. The local cable-car transport system as well as several flights were cancelled on Sunday.
Taiwan reportedly called in 19,000 emergency workers to deal with the Typhoon situation and possible rescue efforts.
Fanapi was likely to hit China’s Fujian province on Monday morning in the form of a typhoon or a possible tropical storm.
