Gary McKinnon not to be extradited to US on hacking charges

Scottish hacker Gary McKinnon, who was facing extradition to the US for the better part of the last ten years, has received a sudden and unexpected postponement of the penalty by the British Home Secretary. The Home Secretary minister Theresa May, while talking to the MPs said that medical reports have warned that McKinnon could kill himself if sent to the US.

Mrs May also said that if it was in the interest of the public, then plans would be made to change the rules of extradition. In the UK, Labour’s former Home Secretary Alan Johnson claimed that May had made the decision in her own party’s interest and not for the greater good of the country.

US authorities had said that McKinnon’s hack was one of the biggest military computer hacks of all time.
