The popular singer revealed that she was diagnosed with the disorder in 2012 and was wrongly diagnosed as a child. Boyle further revealed that she was falsely diagnosed with suffering from brain damage in her childhood. As she was aware that she was incorrectly diagnosed, Boyle explained that she made the decision to re-evaluate herself in 2012.

The singer visited a specialist in her native Scotland and was finally given the correct diagnosis, after waiting for it for 52 years. The singer explained that her final diagnosis was a relief and in an interview on Sunday, December 8, 2013 said, “Some articles have said I have brain damage. It’s been something else. …I have always known that I have had an unfair label put upon me.”

She went on to say that she struggled with relationships and referred to the difficulties involving a person’s social skills that the disorder is responsible for. Boyle said that she does not want to be defined as the singer with Asperger’s, but expressed a relief at the fact that her diagnosis might help people to understand her behavior.
